JEWISH RESIDENTS OF BUKOWSKO, POLAND

The following information was translated from the Spis Parafialny Volume II (church census) of the Roman Catholic church in Bukowsko, województwo (voivodship) Krosno, Poland. Typically the priest would go to each of his parishioners’ homes around Christmas time for the purpose of administering a blessing and to also list in the Spis all the members of the households, making note of all pertinent dates and other information he thought important, such as emigration. Since the Spis was a Roman Catholic census, I have no explanation as to why the Jewish households of Bukowsko were also listed in the book. I have asked the current pastor of the church and he has no explanation.

The current pastor, ks. (father) Kudla, reports that the priest who was in Bukowsko between 1873-1885, ks. Jakubowski, transcribed all the information from Vol. I into Vol. II but my quick examination of a couple of sample pages from Vol. I would seem to indicate that ks. Jakubowski transcribed only that information from Vol. I which remained current at the time of his transcription; for example, names of deceased persons were not transferred into Vol. II.

“Volume III” of the Spis was begun approximately in 1975 and is still in current use, though the information is now kept on index cards rather than in a book. The information set out in the table below has been transcribed and translated from Vol. II of the Spis. The residences in Bukowsko were renumbered at least three times so a residence listed in Vol. II of the Spis can have 1, 2, or 3 house numbers. When the houses were originally built they were numbered sequentially in the order they were built. Subsequently, when the houses were rebuilt they were again numbered sequentially in the order they were rebuilt. The same property can, therefore, have three very different numbers. Ks. Jakubowski clearly indicated the new and old house numbers in Vol. II. If one or two earlier numbers are listed, they were in existence before 1885, the year of ks. Jakubowski's death, since they are in his handwriting. In the table below, the new and old house numbers are written respectively in the “House No.” column (x/y).

The newest house number was written in red at the top of the page in Vol. II and is not in ks. Jakubowski’s handwriting. The newest house number is listed below in the “More Recent Home No.” column. I know from other sources that the third numbers are from a renumbering which took place after the village was burned by the Ukrainian guerrillas of the UPA in 1946. If only one of the earlier numbers is listed that would indicate that the house was either rebuilt in the same order it was built originally, the house did not need to be rebuilt or the house was never rebuilt on that particular property. It should be noted, however, that the existence of a third renumbering for a Jewish residence does not mean that a Jewish family resided there at the time of the third renumbering in 1946. There were no Jews left in Bukowsko after WWII. The inclusion of a third house number for a residence previously occupied by Jews means that the residence was sold or given to a non-Jewish Pole after 1946.

If the word “within” is found in the second column this means that the people lived in the home with Poles. The dates are unknown.

The second volume of the spis makes a distinction of which homes, Jewish and Catholic were located in the “Wies” part of Bukowsko. “Wies” was considered to be “up from the church” or out in the country, not in the same area as the stores, or “in town.”

The table below lists everything that was written about each Jewish family in the Spis Parifialny Vol. II. The priest only listed the head of the household. If an address has more than one name that indicates that more than one family lived at that address, at the same time, which was common. An asterisk * in the Notations column indicates that a family with a Polish surname was also listed in that house. It is unclear whether contemporaneous or sequential.

I have transcribed the names as they were written. I am aware that these may not be the more common spellings or the acceptable spellings, however, I felt it best to present them as written and to include the more common spelling in parenthesis.

I found two notations of interest regarding the Jewish residents of Bukowsko. On page 224 was written, “In the village of Bukowsko at the end of the year 1892, there were 1,733 Catholic souls. In the village of Bukowsko at the end of the year 1892, there were 89 Jewish souls.”

Pages 157 and 158 were apparently torn out of the spis.

The following information was gathered in June, 2005 and July, 2006. Great care was taken in the transcribing of names. It is possible however, that a given name was mistaken for a surname. I would appreciate being notified of any errors.
